Traveling to New York City has become an obligatory rite of passage for generations young and old. Experiencing the electricity that pulses through the streets of Manhattan from the Empire State Building to Central Park is an unparalleled event. With a seemingly endless list of attractions and neighborhoods to explore, no matter how long you plan to stay for you’ll always find something new just around the corner.
Even those that live in the Big Apple can’t experience everything it has to offer. Did you know that there are over 23,000 restaurants in NYC? If you ate at a different one every day, it would take you more than 63 years to try them all! But, as is the case with any world-class city, the costs involved with your journey can make it challenging to find a place to stay.
With the average hotel room in the city costing around $300 USD/night, a week-long trip could cost you over $2,000 before you even get a chance to do anything. Cheaper options are certainly available, but more often than not, the cheaper the price means the farther you are away from the places you want to be.

Cheaper options are certainly available, but more often than not, the cheaper the price means the farther you are away from the places you want to be.
Hostels can be a nice option when traveling solo or with just a couple of other people, but unlike other international cities, New York isn’t well-known for its plethora of hostels. Plus hostels usually mean sleeping on a bunk bed in a room with up to 10 strangers. Not so romantic if you’re traveling with your significant other…
So, what are your other options? Find a motel outside of the city and take a bus or train in everyday? You can try your luck on one of those name-your-own-price websites, but those give you no guarantees on specific locations. Sometimes finding the best deals on accommodation means looking for options you’ve never considered before.
Timeshares. The word strikes fear into the hearts of even the most seasoned travelers because of the industry’s unfortunate history of high-pressure salesmen and inflated price tags. And while these tactics may still exist on the wholesale market (although they are dwindling), the opposite is true for the secondary market. Online by-owner timeshare rental and resale websites give credibility and transparency to an industry that has seen more than its fair share of negativity. By providing a medium to connect existing owners with interested buyers and renters, the timeshare owner has a variety of options available to them to help sell or rent their unused or unwanted properties.
Neat! (sarcasm)… I don’t care. How does this help me get affordable NYC accommodations?
Simple. When owners can’t use their timeshare weeks in a given year, they’re still obligated to pay their annual maintenance fees. Instead of just eating the cost, they can put their week up for rent which then gives you, the budget conscious traveler, the opportunity to rent these weeks at a price far less than what you’d pay at the resort. Take the Manhattan Club for example, located right in the heart of the city. For around $750-$1000 for the whole week (7 nights) you can stay in a 1 bedroom unit that sleeps 4 (the couch pulls out into a bed) and also comes with a full kitchen, living room, and washer/dryer. That’s about $110-$140 per night with twice the amenities you’d get in a hotel room plus full access to everything the resort has to offer.
Am I going to have to listen to a timeshare presentation or have any other obligations if I rent a timeshare?
No. By renting an owner’s timeshare you are basically just filling in for them. You are treated the same way an owner would be with all the same privileges and access to amenities. It will feel the same as staying at a hotel, just with a much nicer room and facility.
No matter what your plans are for your New York City adventure, find the best accommodation option that’s going fit your travel needs so you can focus on what’s really important; the greatest city in the world.
