Simple. When owners can’t use their timeshare weeks in a given year, they’re still obligated to pay their annual maintenance fees. Instead of just eating the cost, they can put their week up for rent which then gives you, the budget conscious traveler, the opportunity to rent these weeks at a price far less than what you’d pay at the resort. Take the Manhattan Club for example, located right in the heart of the city. For around $750-$1000 for the whole week (7 nights) you can stay in a 1 bedroom unit that sleeps 4 (the couch pulls out into a bed) and also comes with a full kitchen, living room, and washer/dryer. That’s about $110-$140 per night with twice the amenities you’d get in a hotel room plus full access to everything the resort has to offer.
Am I going to have to listen to a timeshare presentation or have any other obligations if I rent a timeshare?
No. By renting an owner’s timeshare you are basically just filling in for them. You are treated the same way an owner would be with all the same privileges and access to amenities. It will feel the same as staying at a hotel, just with a much nicer room and facility.
