Is Kim Kardashian graffiti a sign of the Apocalypse? (street art photo of the week)

Is the Apocalypse drawing near?  The blogosphere is buzzing with freakish occurrences that seem to indicate a global meltdown.

The NY Times reported that 5,000 birds fell from the sky on New Year’s Eve in Arkansas. Not to be outdone, UK newspaper The Sun ticked off a list of animal catastrophes, including two million fish washing ashore in Maryland. The Movieline blog fueled the fire by suggesting that a recent lotto drawing, which featured four of the numbers from the TV show Lost, is another sign of the Apocalypse.

A stroll through the East Village today confirmed that the end of days may be upon us. While walking down Bleeker Street, I spotted this street art tribute to Kim Kardashian. Could street art featuring the vacuous TV star be a final sign of the Apocalypse?

A sticker with Kim Kardashian's image on Bleeker Street in the East Village.

Located just east of the shuttered Bleeker Street Theater, this sticker contains a black and white image of the Keeping Up with the Kardashians star. An Internet search did not turn up any leads on the artist behind this reality TV graffiti.

At first I assumed the duct tape covering the starlet’s mouth was a commentary on pop culture or the instant fame of reality TV stars. Surely this couldn’t be a straightforward tribute to Kim Kardashian, known for her lack of substance and large derriere.

I was disappointed to discover that this street art was merely a xeroxed copy of a Kim Kardashian photo.  The image was lifted from the No H8 campaign, which protests California’s ban on gay marriage. The original photograph is by Adam Bouska. The graffiti artist’s only contribution was to add a tag to Kardashian’s shirt.

The Kim Kardashian sticker also turned up near the entrance to the Bowery Hotel, a popular celeb hangout.

This uninspired work of street art just may be a sign of the Apocalypse. If Kim Kardashian becomes a spokesmodel for graffiti, we should all start heading for the hills.
